Kazakhstan to China Freight Forwarding

Trusted Kazakhstan to China shipping with all-inclusive rates

China is Kazakhstan's largest trading partner, and the flow east is not only oil and gas in pipelines. Behind the pipelines runs a container and wagon trade that a forwarder can actually book: wheat, barley, flour and flax seed to Chinese mills and crushers; copper cathodes and concentrates, zinc and ferrochrome to smelters; beef, mutton and honey under bilateral veterinary protocols; wool and hides. All of it crosses two rail gateways — Dostyk/Alashankou and Altynkol/Khorgos — where 1520 mm Kazakh track meets 1435 mm Chinese track and every load is transferred, plus a handful of road crossings led by Nur Zholy at Khorgos. The corridor is short on the map and long in paperwork: China's import regime for food, grain and minerals is registration-driven, and a shipment that arrives at Alashankou without the right approvals in place does not enter.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

This is the one lane where AGF has people at both ends of the border. In Almaty, DDC — our authorized representative in Kazakhstan — handles collection, Kazakh export formalities, phytosanitary and veterinary certificates, and the rail or road booking to the gateway. In Foshan, our own office is on the Chinese side of the same trade: we work with the importer on GACC registrations, quarantine permits and the customs declaration, and we can arrange onward rail, road or coastal delivery from Xinjiang to any Chinese city. Between the two we manage the border transfer itself — the wagon or container transload at Dostyk or Altynkol — which is where most delays on this corridor are born. And because we book the return direction every week, Chinese consumer goods and machinery westbound, we can often pair a Kazakh export with equipment that would otherwise reposition empty.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from Kazakhstan to China take?
Road from Almaty to Urumqi through Khorgos is typically 3-6 days including the border. Rail from Almaty or Astana to Xi'an, Chongqing or Chengdu runs about 10-16 days, and 15-20 days to Guangdong or the coast, with 1-3 of those days spent at the gauge break at Dostyk or Altynkol while wagons or containers are transferred. Air freight from Almaty to Urumqi is same-day or next-day, and to Beijing, Shanghai or Guangzhou 2-4 days including handling. Perishables and samples fly; almost everything else goes by rail.
What does Kazakhstan export to China that moves in containers and wagons?
Grain and grain products — wheat, barley, wheat flour — and oilseeds, above all flax seed, of which Kazakhstan is China's largest supplier. Metals and minerals: copper cathodes and copper concentrate, zinc, ferrochrome and other ferroalloys, iron ore. Animal products under bilateral protocols: beef and mutton, honey, wool, hides and skins. Oil, gas and uranium are pipeline and specialist trades that a freight forwarder does not book, and we say so rather than pretend otherwise.
What Chinese import approvals does my cargo need before it ships?
Food, grain and animal products enter China on registrations, not on a customs declaration alone. Producers of grain, flour, oils, meat, dairy and honey must be registered with China's customs authority, GACC, through the Kazakh competent authority; grain and animal products also need an import quarantine permit obtained by the Chinese buyer before shipment; grain must enter through a designated grain port, which Alashankou and Khorgos both are; and wheat falls under China's tariff-rate quota, so the buyer needs quota allocation. Minerals are simpler, but copper concentrate has statutory limits on arsenic, lead and other impurities. We confirm every one of these is in place before a wagon is booked.
Is rail or road cheaper from Kazakhstan to China?
For Xinjiang delivery a truck is usually quicker and competitive on price; for anything east of Urumqi rail wins on cost, and for bulk grain and minerals rail is the only sensible mode. The variables are the border: rail transfer queues at Dostyk and Altynkol, road permit and driver-entry rules that change on both sides, and seasonal grain surges that fill the gateways. We quote both modes against real conditions that month rather than a rate sheet.
Who clears customs on the Chinese side?
Import declarations are made in the name of the Chinese importer of record, and the licences and registrations belong to them — that cannot be outsourced. What we do is prepare the documentary set so it clears first time (phytosanitary or veterinary certificate, certificate of origin, commercial documents, assay or weight certificates for minerals), arrange the customs broker at the port of entry, and coordinate quarantine inspection and any sampling. Our Foshan office does this in Chinese, with the importer, and in real time.
