Shipping from China to Europe

Trusted China to Europe shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

China is the European Union's largest source of imported goods, and much of what Europe buys — furniture, lighting, appliances, machinery and electrical equipment — is made in the Pearl River Delta around our Foshan office. There are three ways to move it. Ocean freight to the North Range or the Mediterranean, where carriers have returned to the Suez Canal only service by service and the rest still sail around the Cape of Good Hope. Rail, which we book only on the Middle Corridor through Kazakhstan, the Caspian and the Caucasus, never across Russia or Belarus. And air. The EU end has also become harder: product-safety rules that need an EU responsible person, a formaldehyde limit for furniture since August 2026, deforestation due diligence for wood from 30 December 2026, the carbon border mechanism (CBAM) on steel and aluminium, and anti-dumping duties on a growing list of Chinese goods.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

This lane starts in our own office. AGF's team in Foshan visits factories, checks goods against your specification, consolidates several suppliers into one container, supervises and photographs loading, and prepares the export documents and the data for the EU's ICS2 entry summary before the container sails. In Europe we work through WCA partner agents in the country of delivery — AGF has no office in Europe — who clear the goods as your customs representative, handle import VAT and deliver. For rail we book only Middle Corridor services through Kazakhstan; we do not book China–Europe trains that cross Russia or Belarus, and every shipment is screened before it is booked.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from China to Europe take?
By sea it depends on the routing. Via Suez, South China to the North European ports usually takes roughly four to five weeks port to port; a service that still sails around the Cape of Good Hope adds roughly 10–15 days. Mediterranean ports such as Piraeus, Genoa and Valencia gain the most from a Suez routing and lose the most on the Cape. Air freight takes 3–5 days via the main hubs. Middle Corridor rail sits between the two on both cost and time, and we quote its transit per booking.
Are container ships using the Suez Canal again?
Partly. Through 2026 several carriers have moved some Asia–Europe services back through Suez, while others still route around the Cape. The decision is made service by service, so two containers booked the same week with different carriers can arrive a fortnight apart, and a wider return can bring short-term congestion at European hubs as ships bunch up. We confirm the routing of your specific sailing when we book it, rather than assume either.
Can I ship from China to Europe by train without going through Russia?
Yes — by the Middle Corridor, the only China–Europe rail routing we book. Containers run by rail to the Kazakh border at Khorgos or Dostyk, across Kazakhstan to the Caspian ports of Aktau or Kuryk, by ferry to Azerbaijan, and on through Georgia — then by Black Sea feeder to ports such as Constanța, or by rail through Türkiye. We do not book the northern route through Russia and Belarus that most China–Europe trains used before 2022. The Middle Corridor has more handoffs and finite ferry capacity on the Caspian, so we plan buffer time, book the ferry leg early and quote transit per booking.
Which European port should I ship to from China?
The one that minimises the total, not just the ocean leg. Rotterdam, Antwerp-Bruges and Hamburg have the most Asia services and serve Germany, the Benelux, France and Central Europe. Gdańsk has direct Asia calls and suits Poland and the Baltic region. Piraeus, Genoa, Valencia and the Adriatic ports suit southern and south-eastern Europe and are shortest when the service uses Suez. Sweden is usually served through Gothenburg. We compare the sailing, the inland leg and the risk of hub congestion for your delivery address.
Who clears customs in Europe — do you have an office there?
AGF has no office in Europe. Clearance is handled by our WCA partner agent in the country of delivery, acting as customs representative for your company, which is the importer and needs an EORI number. Import VAT is due at that country's rate, and some countries — the Netherlands and Belgium are common examples — let a registered importer or fiscal representative account for it instead of paying at the border. Before loading, the carrier files the EU's ICS2 entry summary, so our Foshan team makes sure every line has a real description and HS code.
What EU rules catch out importers from China?
Mostly rules that bind the importer rather than the customs officer. The General Product Safety Regulation requires an economic operator in the EU for consumer products, with traceability details on the product. Machinery and electrical goods need valid CE marking — a test report from a Chinese lab is not the same as a notified-body certificate — and the new Machinery Regulation applies from 20 January 2027. Furniture faces a REACH formaldehyde limit since 6 August 2026 and, if it contains wood, the EU Deforestation Regulation from 30 December 2026. Steel and aluminium goods fall under CBAM. And anti-dumping duties apply to Chinese hardwood plywood, aluminium extrusions, mobile access equipment, e-bikes and many steel products — so check the TARIC code before you order.
Can you consolidate several Chinese suppliers into one container for Europe?
Yes, and it is one of the main reasons European importers use our Foshan office. Suppliers deliver to a consolidation warehouse in South China, where our team checks quantities and condition against each order, loads one container and photographs it before sealing. You receive one container, one bill of lading and one EU import declaration instead of several LCL shipments, each with its own handling charges at both ends.
Do you ship from China to Sweden and the Nordics?
Yes. Swedish and Nordic cargo usually moves by ocean to Gothenburg, either direct or relayed through a North Range hub, with clearance and delivery by our WCA partners in Sweden. Our China to Sweden lane page covers that route, its transit times and the Swedish VAT and EORI basics in detail.
