Shipping from the USA to France

Trusted USA to France shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

France buys roughly $51 billion of US goods a year: aircraft engines and parts for the Toulouse and Paris aerospace industry, industrial machinery, medical and laboratory equipment, chemicals and pharmaceuticals, and a steady flow of American cars, from late-model pickups and muscle cars to classics. Since 1 July 2026 the EU has charged 0% customs duty on US-origin cars and industrial goods, which removes the 10% duty that used to sit on every imported American car. That has made the question French buyers search for — how to import a car from the USA to France, "importer voiture usa en france" — a practical one. French VAT, homologation and the registration malus still apply, and this lane is about getting all of that right as well as the freight. Ocean cargo arrives at Le Havre, Marseille-Fos or Dunkirk; air freight lands at Paris Charles de Gaulle.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

AGF is headquartered in Glendale, in the Los Angeles area, and the US end of this lane is ours: collection from dealers, auctions, private sellers and factories, consolidation at a partner warehouse near the Los Angeles and Long Beach ports, the US export filings — including the Electronic Export Information for every used vehicle and the title documents CBP needs before a vehicle is exported — and the ocean or air booking as an FMC-licensed NVOCC. Cargo from the East Coast leaves through New York/New Jersey or Savannah. In France we work through WCA partner agents in France; AGF has no office there. Our partner arranges customs clearance through a registered customs representative and delivery to the buyer, and for cars the documents French registration depends on. Quotes are door to door, with exclusions listed up front.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I import a car from the USA to France?
On the US side, the vehicle needs its original title, presented to CBP before export, and an Electronic Export Information filing in AES whatever its value; we arrange collection, loading and the ocean booking. On arrival, French customs clears the car: US-built cars pay 0% EU duty since 1 July 2026, but import VAT at 20% is due on the value including freight, and the customs clearance certificate (846 A) is issued for registration. A car without European type approval then needs individual approval (réception à titre isolé) before it can be registered, and modern cars pay the French registration malus on CO2 emissions and weight, which can be a large sum for a powerful American car. Cars that qualify as collectors' items — generally over 30 years old and in original condition — are classified as collection vehicles, pay import VAT at the reduced 5.5% rate, and register on a collection certificate. Check the malus and approval route before you buy.
Does the 0% EU duty apply to every car shipped from the USA?
It applies to cars of US origin. A car built in Germany, Japan or Mexico and bought in the US is not a US-origin car, and it pays the duty that applies to its real origin. Proof of origin is checked at French customs, so we confirm the build origin from the VIN and documents before booking. Import VAT and the registration malus apply either way.
How much does it cost to ship a car from the USA to France?
It depends on whether the car ships in a shared container, a sole-use container or by RoRo where a service fits, which US coast it leaves from, and the inland legs at both ends — those often move the total more than the ocean rate. French VAT and the malus are separate from the freight and frequently larger. We quote door to port or door to door, with exclusions listed up front, and agreed-value insurance for collector cars.
Do I need an export licence to ship aircraft parts or machinery to France?
Most civil aircraft parts and industrial machinery ship to France without a licence, but that is a classification result, not an assumption. Items are classified under the Export Administration Regulations, and defense articles under ITAR need a State Department licence. Electronic Export Information is filed in AES for shipments over $2,500 per Schedule B line or whenever a licence is required. France itself is not a sanctioned destination, but the end user is still screened.
How long does shipping from the USA to France take?
East Coast sailings to Le Havre are broadly comparable to the westbound crossing, which runs roughly 9-16 days from Le Havre to New York, and cargo from California goes through the Panama Canal, which takes several weeks longer; transit is confirmed per booking. Air freight from Los Angeles or New York to Paris CDG takes days. For cars, allow time for title processing and export filing before the vessel date.
