Importing from Italy to the USA

Trusted Italy to USA shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

Italy sells the United States a catalog that is unusually hard to substitute: wine from Piedmont, Tuscany and the Veneto; olive oil, Parmigiano Reggiano and the rest of the Italian pantry; packaging and food-processing lines from Emilia-Romagna; machine tools from Lombardy; porcelain tile from Sassuolo and marble from Carrara; design furniture and lighting from Brianza, the Veneto and Friuli; and the classic Alfa Romeos, Lancias and Ferraris that US collectors import under the 25-year rule. Most of it leaves through Genoa and La Spezia, the gateway container ports for northern Italy, with Livorno and Marina di Carrara for stone, Trieste and Venice for the northeast, Vado Ligure for reefer cargo and Salerno for roll-on/roll-off sailings. The crossing is short — Genoa to New York runs 9-22 days depending on whether the service calls direct or transships — and what decides a landed cost is the classification: the EU tariff layer, the Section 232 rules for cars, furniture and metal-intensive machinery, and the US agencies that regulate food, wine and vehicles.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

We work through WCA partner agents in Italy; AGF has no office there. Our partner collects from the cantina, factory or seller, consolidates pallets from several producers where that saves money, lodges the Italian export declaration and books the sailing. AGF runs the shipment from Glendale and puts the US end together before the cargo leaves: the ISF filed before loading at Genoa, FDA prior notice for food and wine, TTB and USDA requirements checked against the product, EPA and DOT declarations for vehicles, and the entry filed by our licensed customs brokers. We confirm the tariff position for each HS line at quoting — the EU 10% layer, a Section 232 cap or an antidumping order — so the duty is known before you commit, and we quote door to door with the exclusions listed up front. Heavy and oversized machinery, slabs and project furniture are delivered through our trucking, drayage and rigging partners.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from Italy to the USA take?
Genoa or La Spezia to New York runs 9-22 days: the short end on services that call direct, the long end where the box is transshipped at another Mediterranean hub. Savannah is about 21-25 days, and Los Angeles about 35 days through the Panama Canal — for West Coast and inland destinations it is worth comparing that with East Coast discharge plus rail. Air freight from Milan Malpensa suits samples, spare parts and urgent machine components; we confirm the transit for each booking.
What tariffs apply to imports from Italy?
Since 24 July 2026, most EU goods — Italian goods included — pay their normal duty topped up to 10% in total under a Section 301 measure; goods whose normal duty is already 10% or more pay nothing extra. Section 232 goods follow their own rules instead: EU cars, auto parts, upholstered wooden furniture and kitchen cabinets are capped at 15% all-in, while steel, aluminum and listed metal-intensive machinery carry their own rates with no EU cap. One Italian product also carries trade-remedy duties: dry pasta, under long-standing antidumping and countervailing duty orders with producer-specific rates. Rates change, so we confirm the total for your exact HS code at quoting.
What export documents does an Italian supplier need?
The exporter needs an EORI number, and the export declaration is lodged electronically with Italy's customs agency (ADM) in its AIDA system, which issues the MRN that tracks the goods until exit is confirmed. Wine and other excise goods also travel under an electronic e-AD that the export discharges. A non-preferential certificate of origin from the local Chamber of Commerce is issued when the buyer, a bank or a letter of credit asks for it; there is no EUR.1, because the EU and the US have no free-trade agreement. On the US side, the commercial invoice and packing list feed the ISF, which must be filed before the container is loaded in Italy.
When is the worst time to ship from Italy?
August. Much of Italian industry closes for two to three weeks around Ferragosto on 15 August, so factory acceptance tests, collections and export paperwork stall — plan production to ship in July or after the restart in September. Food and wine follow the harvest calendar instead: the grape harvest runs from late summer into autumn, new-season olive oil ships from November, and Christmas products such as panettone move in September and October. Wine and oil shipped between June and September need temperature protection, and the Christmas-to-Epiphany weeks are slow at origin too.
Does AGF have an office in Italy?
No. Our offices are in Glendale, California and Foshan, China. In Italy we work through WCA partner agents, who handle collection, consolidation, export customs and loading, while AGF coordinates the shipment end to end and our licensed customs brokers file the US entry. You deal with one point of contact for the whole move.
