Shipping from China to Italy

Trusted China to Italy shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

China is one of Italy's largest sources of imports, and the Italian buyers who search for 'importare dalla Cina' and 'container dalla Cina' are often small and mid-sized companies: furniture and lighting retailers, contractors and building-material distributors, machine builders buying components, and wholesalers of electrical goods, tools and household products. Much of that supply sits in Guangdong — Foshan and Shunde for furniture, Zhongshan for lighting, the Pearl River Delta for electrical and metal goods — which is where AGF has its own office. Cargo sails from Nansha, Yantian or Shekou, or from Shanghai and Ningbo, to Genoa, La Spezia, Trieste, Venice, Livorno or Naples and Salerno. Arrival in Italy is where the work is: EU customs duty on the TARIC line, Italian import VAT (IVA) at 22%, and a body of EU product law — CE marking, the General Product Safety Regulation, producer registrations, anti-dumping duties and, for steel and aluminium, CBAM — that decides whether the goods can be sold once they are cleared.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

The China end is ours. Our own office in Foshan coordinates suppliers and factory pickups across Guangdong and beyond, checks goods and packing against the order, supervises container loading and handles Chinese export documentation, so the documents that reach Italy match what is in the box. In Italy we work through WCA partner agents; AGF has no office there. Our partner's customs representative lodges the import declaration in the importer's name and EORI number, pays or defers duty and IVA, and arranges delivery to your warehouse. We prepare the document set from Foshan with the EU checks in mind — the TARIC code, any anti-dumping duty on the line, CE and GPSR details on the product, CBAM data from the supplier for steel and aluminium — and we quote door to door with the exclusions listed up front. Rail is offered only through the Middle Corridor via Kazakhstan; we do not route through Russia or Belarus.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from China to Italy take?
By sea it depends first on routing: carriers choose between the Suez Canal and the Cape of Good Hope service by service, and a Cape routing adds well over a week to a Mediterranean port. Whether the box calls Genoa or La Spezia direct or is transshipped at another hub matters too, so we give you the transit for the actual sailing at booking rather than an average. Rail through the Middle Corridor sits between sea and air on cost and time, and air freight from Guangzhou, Shenzhen or Hong Kong to Milan Malpensa is the option for urgent cargo; both are quoted per booking.
How much does it cost to import a container from China to Italy?
The ocean freight is only one line. A landed cost adds the carriers' surcharges (including the EU ETS emissions surcharge on Europe-bound sailings), Italian port and terminal charges, the customs representative's fee, EU customs duty at the TARIC rate for each product, any anti-dumping duty on that product, Italian IVA at 22% on the customs value plus duty and transport to destination, and the trucking to your warehouse. IVA is recoverable for VAT-registered businesses, but it has to be paid or deferred at clearance. We quote the whole chain from the factory in China to your door, with the exclusions listed up front.
Who clears customs in Italy for goods from China?
The importer of record is the Italian buyer, who needs an EORI number. The declaration is lodged by a customs representative — our WCA partner agent in Italy, or your own representative if you prefer — acting in your name. From Foshan we supply what that declaration needs: commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, the supplier's product and conformity documents, and CBAM emissions data where the goods are steel or aluminium.
Which EU rules catch Chinese goods after they land in Italy?
Clearance is not the same as being allowed to sell. Consumer products need an EU-based responsible economic operator under the General Product Safety Regulation, with contact details on the product or packaging; machinery, electrical goods and toys need CE marking backed by a technical file; electrical goods, batteries and packaging bring producer registrations in Italy; e-bikes carry long-running EU anti-dumping and countervailing duties; and e-bikes, batteries and battery-powered products fall under the EU Battery Regulation. Iron, steel and aluminium goods fall under CBAM: an importer bringing in more than 50 tonnes a year must be an authorised CBAM declarant. Chinese-built electric cars carry EU countervailing duties of up to 35.3% on top of the normal 10% car duty. We check these points with you before the goods ship.
Can I ship by rail from China to Italy?
Yes, but only through the Middle Corridor — through Kazakhstan, across the Caspian, then through Azerbaijan and Georgia and on by sea or by road through Türkiye. We do not book China-Europe rail services that cross Russia or Belarus. The corridor has limited capacity and more handoffs than a single rail routing, so we quote it with its transit per booking and plan buffer time.
