Shipping from France to the USA

Trusted France to USA shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

France ships the United States roughly $69 billion of goods a year, and very little of it is commodity cargo. The largest flows are aircraft, engines and parts from the Toulouse, Bordeaux and Paris aerospace clusters, pharmaceuticals, industrial machinery, and the products France is known for: wine and Champagne, Cognac and other spirits, perfume and cosmetics, cheese and fine food, and antiques, art and design furniture. Most of it is high in value for its weight, regulated at the US border by an agency other than customs — TTB, FDA, the FAA's airworthiness system, the Fish and Wildlife Service — and sensitive to heat, handling or theft. Ocean cargo leaves through Le Havre, France's largest container port and the natural gateway for Paris, Normandy, Champagne and the north; Marseille-Fos, which serves Provence, the Rhône valley and the south; and Dunkirk. Urgent and high-value freight flies from Paris Charles de Gaulle. Transit from Le Havre is roughly 9-16 days on the water to New York and about 15 days to Savannah; Los Angeles, via the Panama Canal, takes roughly 28-36 days.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

We work through WCA partner agents in France; AGF has no office there. Our partners collect from producers, domaines, dealers and factories, prepare the French export declaration and, for wine and spirits, the excise movement document, consolidate several suppliers into one container where that makes sense, and load at Le Havre, Fos or Dunkirk. AGF books the ocean or air freight as an FMC-licensed NVOCC, the US entry is filed by our licensed customs brokers, and our Glendale team runs delivery to your warehouse, distributor or showroom. What we add on this lane is the regulatory homework that French goods need before they sail: TTB permits and label approvals for alcohol, FDA Prior Notice and the import alerts that apply to French cheese, MoCRA registration and dangerous-goods paperwork for perfume, the civil-aircraft duty certification for aerospace parts, and age and export-certificate evidence for antiques. Quotes are door to door, with exclusions listed up front.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from France to the USA take?
From Le Havre, ocean transit is roughly 9-16 days to New York and about 15 days to Savannah, depending on the carrier's rotation. The West Coast is a much longer voyage through the Panama Canal — roughly 28-36 days to Los Angeles — which matters for heat-sensitive cargo such as wine, cheese and perfume. Sailings from Marseille-Fos suit shippers in the south of France, with transit confirmed per booking. Door to door, add collection in France, export clearance, US clearance and delivery. Air freight from Paris CDG reaches US gateways in days rather than weeks.
What tariffs apply to imports from France?
Since 24 July 2026, most EU goods pay their normal duty topped up to 10% in total under a Section 301 measure — goods whose normal duty is already 10% or more pay nothing extra. Section 232 goods follow their own rules instead: EU cars, auto parts, upholstered wooden furniture and kitchen cabinets are capped at 15% all-in, while steel and aluminum products carry their own rates. Several French goods have their own position: civil aircraft parts enter duty-free when certified for civil-aircraft use, original art and antiques over 100 years old are duty-free, and wine, Cognac and food carry open questions — a pending Section 301 investigation into excess capacity that names food and beverages, and the status of the suspended Airbus–Boeing dispute tariffs. Alcohol also pays federal excise tax. Rates change, so we confirm the total for your exact HS code at quoting.
Do I need an agent in France to import French goods?
You need someone at origin to collect the goods, file the French export declaration and, for wine and spirits, discharge the excise movement under which the goods left the producer's bonded premises. Many French suppliers sell ex-works and expect the buyer's forwarder to do this. Our WCA partner agents in France handle it on our behalf, so you deal with AGF for the whole chain, and the US entry is filed by our licensed customs brokers.
Can you consolidate goods from several French suppliers into one container?
Yes. Importers buying from several domaines, dealers or manufacturers can have the goods collected and consolidated by our partner agents and shipped in one container, which usually beats several small LCL shipments on cost and handling. Each supplier's goods keep their own invoice lines and country of origin on the US entry. For temperature-sensitive goods we plan the consolidation so nothing waits on a warm dock.
Do French port strikes delay shipments?
French ports see periodic industrial action, and it can close terminals or slow operations for days at a time. We watch for announced strikes, build buffers into time-critical shipments, and where it makes sense look at an alternative gateway — Dunkirk, Fos, or Antwerp for cargo from northern France — confirmed per booking. August is also a slow month, when many French suppliers close for the summer holidays.
