Shipping from the USA to Italy

Trusted USA to Italy shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

Since 1 July 2026, Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 has removed EU customs duty on industrial goods originating in the United States — machinery, medical and laboratory equipment, chemicals, parts and cars among them — and opened reduced-duty quotas for a list of US agricultural and seafood products, including tree nuts. For American cars the change is the end of the EU's 10% car duty, and Italians searching for 'importare auto dagli Stati Uniti' now pay Italian VAT and registration costs rather than duty. The rest of the lane is steady industrial trade: machinery and spare parts for Italian plants, medical and laboratory equipment, California almonds and pistachios, and the household goods of families moving to Italy. Cargo sails from New York, Savannah, Charleston and Houston, or from Los Angeles and Long Beach through the Panama Canal, to Genoa, La Spezia, Livorno, Trieste and Venice, with roll-on/roll-off sailings into Salerno.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

The US end is ours. From Glendale we arrange pickup anywhere in the country, container loading at our partner warehouses, the Electronic Export Information filing in AES and, for vehicles, the title documents US Customs needs at least 72 hours before export. In Italy we work through WCA partner agents; AGF has no office there. Our partner's customs representative clears the goods, pays or defers the 22% IVA and arranges delivery, and the zero-duty claim needs evidence that the goods are of US origin under the EU's non-preferential origin rules — a car or machine sold in the US but built elsewhere does not qualify, so we check origin with you before booking. We quote door to door with the exclusions listed up front.

Frequently Asked Questions

What import duty does Italy charge on goods from the USA?
Italy applies the EU tariff. Since 1 July 2026, Regulation (EU) 2026/1455 sets EU customs duty at 0% on industrial goods of US origin, cars included, and opens reduced-duty quotas for certain US agricultural and seafood products; other farm goods keep their normal EU rates. Origin is judged under the EU's non-preferential rules, so the goods must actually be US-made, and the Commission can suspend the preference if the trade framework breaks down. Italian import VAT (IVA) at 22% applies on top, calculated on the customs value plus duty and transport to the destination, and alcohol and fuel add excise. We confirm the position for your goods at quoting.
Can I ship an American car to Italy?
Yes. A US-built car now enters the EU at 0% duty, with 22% IVA on its value plus shipping, and it ships in a container — sole-use or shared — or by roll-on/roll-off to Salerno where a sailing fits. Before export, the title and documents go to US Customs at least 72 hours ahead and the export is filed in AES. Registration in Italy is a separate step: the car needs technical approval from the Motorizzazione, and US-specification lighting and other equipment often need changes first, so check that with an Italian homologation specialist before you buy. A car sold in the US but built in Mexico, Canada or Japan does not get the US-origin zero duty.
How long does shipping from the USA to Italy take?
It depends on the carrier's rotation and whether the box calls Genoa or La Spezia direct or is transshipped, and we confirm the transit for your sailing at booking. As a guide, the westbound crossing from Genoa to New York runs 9-22 days. Cargo from California either sails through the Panama Canal or moves by rail to an East Coast port first; we compare both for your pickup point.
Can I ship household goods when moving to Italy?
Yes. The EU allows personal property to enter free of duty and VAT on a transfer of residence, provided you have lived outside the EU for at least 12 months and have owned and used the goods for at least six months; it is claimed with an inventory and evidence of your new Italian residence, and goods generally have to be imported within 12 months of moving. We load at your home or at a partner warehouse, and our partner agent in Italy handles the clearance and delivery.
