USA to Japan Freight Forwarding

Trusted USA to Japan shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

Japan buys American machinery, medical and laboratory equipment, chemicals, vehicles and farm products, and on the industrial side almost none of it pays Japanese import duty: cars and most machinery enter duty-free, with the 10% consumption tax collected at import. The difficulty on this lane is not the tariff but the standards. An American car has to pass Japanese inspection before it can be registered; electrical equipment has to suit a 100/200-volt grid split between 50 Hz in the east and 60 Hz in the west; and Japanese customs expects documents that match the goods exactly. Alongside the commercial trade runs a steady personal one from Southern California, home to one of the largest communities of Japanese nationals living abroad: families returning to Japan after an assignment, and Americans relocating there for work.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

We work through WCA partner agents in Japan; AGF has no office there. The US end is coordinated by our own team in Glendale: we arrange pickup anywhere in the country, export crating and container loading through partner facilities in Los Angeles, the EEI filing in AES, and — for vehicles — presentation of the title to CBP at least 72 hours before export. In Japan, our partner agent arranges customs clearance through NACCS with the consignee, delivery to the door — often by smaller trucks, because many residential streets cannot take a container chassis — and coordination with the inspection and registration specialists an imported car needs. AGF is an FMC-licensed NVOCC (OTI #031665NF) and a WCA member.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from the USA to Japan take?
From Los Angeles/Long Beach, direct container services typically reach Tokyo or Yokohama in roughly 12–18 days port to port, with Nagoya, Kobe and Osaka depending on the carrier's rotation. East Coast and Gulf origins take longer, either all-water or by rail to the West Coast first. We confirm the sailing and transit per booking, and plan around Japanese New Year, Golden Week and Obon, when clearance and deliveries slow down.
What import duty and tax does Japan charge?
Japan charges no import duty on cars and on most industrial machinery; the 10% consumption tax is collected at import on the customs value plus any duty. Some goods do carry duty — many foods, leather goods and footwear among them — and cars also pay Japanese registration taxes after clearance. The consignee's customs broker confirms the classification; we make sure the documents support it.
Can I ship my car from the USA to Japan?
Yes. Japan charges no import duty on cars, only the 10% consumption tax at import, and left-hand-drive cars can be registered. The work is the registration: a privately imported car has to pass Japanese inspection, which usually means lighting changes such as amber rear turn signals and headlamps set for left-hand traffic, plus emissions and noise documentation, and the owner needs a parking certificate in most areas. On the US side, the title goes to CBP at least 72 hours before export and an EEI is filed for every used vehicle.
How do I ship household goods to Japan when I move?
Declare them when you land. Japanese customs requires form C5360, the declaration of personal effects and unaccompanied articles, submitted in two copies on arrival; the stamped copy is what clears your shipment later. Used personal effects you owned before the move are generally duty-free, and the shipment should be imported within six months of your arrival. We arrange packing, a full or shared container from Southern California, and clearance and delivery through our partner agent in Japan.
Do I need an export license to ship equipment to Japan?
Usually not, but classification comes first. Every item is classified under the Export Administration Regulations: most machinery is EAR99 or ships under an ECCN that needs no license to Japan, but some controlled items do, whatever the destination. An EEI is filed in AES when any Schedule B line exceeds $2,500 or a license is required, and all parties are screened before booking.
