Shipping from China to Canada

Trusted China to Canada shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

China is Canada's second-largest source of imported goods after the United States, and much of what Canadian businesses buy there — furniture, lighting, building materials, machinery and household goods — is made in the Pearl River Delta around our Foshan office. Most of it crosses the Pacific to Vancouver or Prince Rupert and continues by rail to Toronto, Montreal and the Prairies; some sails all-water to Halifax or Montreal. The Canadian end has become stricter: every commercial importer now needs its own CBSA import-export (RM) account in the CARM Client Portal, and its own financial security to keep release before payment. China-specific surtaxes apply to steel and aluminum goods, and since 1 March 2026 Chinese electric vehicles enter only under a permit-based quota. Anti-dumping and countervailing duties cover a long list of Chinese products, from upholstered seating and mattresses to steel racks and fasteners. And goods made wholly or partly with forced or child labour may not be imported at all.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

This lane starts in our own office. AGF's team in Foshan visits factories, checks goods against your specification, consolidates several suppliers into one container, supervises and photographs loading, and prepares the export documents and the cargo descriptions behind the CBSA's advance eManifest data. We book from Nansha, Shekou or Yantian, or from Shanghai and Ningbo for suppliers further north. In Canada we work through a WCA partner agent — AGF has no office there — and clearance is filed by a licensed Canadian customs broker under your company's own business number and CARM account, so duty, GST and any surtax or anti-dumping duty are assessed on true values in your name. Delivery continues by rail and truck to your door anywhere in the country. AGF is an FMC-licensed NVOCC (OTI #031665NF) and a WCA member.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from China to Canada take?
From South China, direct services typically reach Vancouver in about 14–20 days port to port. Prince Rupert, North America's closest port to Asia, is shorter still from Shanghai and North China. Containers for Ontario, Quebec and the Prairies usually continue by CN or CPKC rail, roughly 4.5–6 days from the West Coast to Toronto. All-water services to Halifax or Montreal sail through the Suez or Panama canal and take considerably longer, so for most eastern deliveries we compare them with West Coast discharge plus rail. Air freight, for samples and urgent parts, is measured in days rather than weeks. Every transit is a typical range, confirmed per booking.
What duties and taxes do I pay when importing from China to Canada?
Customs duty is set by the tariff classification of each product and charged on its value for duty. GST at 5% is then charged at the border on that value plus duty. In the HST provinces — Ontario and the Atlantic provinces — the provincial part of HST is not collected at the border on commercial goods; a registered importer self-assesses it on its GST/HST return where required. British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec apply their own provincial sales tax or QST rules. A GST/HST-registered business can usually recover the GST as an input tax credit. Some Chinese goods also carry a surtax or anti-dumping duty, so the partner's broker confirms the full amount for your tariff codes before you order.
Do I need a CARM account to import from China into Canada?
Yes, if you import commercially. CARM is the CBSA's system of record: your company needs a business number with an import-export (RM) program account, registered in the CARM Client Portal, where you also authorise your customs broker to act for you. To keep release prior to payment — goods released at the border, duties and taxes paid later — importers have had to post their own financial security since 2025, because a broker's security no longer covers them. Without it, goods wait until duties and taxes are paid. Set this up before the container sails; a non-resident importer obtains its business number from the CRA rather than in the portal.
What extra tariffs apply to Chinese goods in Canada?
Several, and they make goods heavily tariffed rather than banned. Steel and aluminum goods made in China carry a surtax on top of normal duty, and separate measures reach goods from any country that contain Chinese-melted steel or Chinese-smelted aluminum, steel from non-free-trade partners above a quarterly quota, and certain steel derivative goods. Only one of these steel surtaxes applies to a given good, under a fixed order of precedence, and remission orders relieve some products. Since 1 March 2026 the surtax on Chinese electric vehicles has been replaced by an annual quota: each shipment needs an import permit from Global Affairs Canada, and imports without one are prohibited. Separately, CBSA anti-dumping and countervailing measures apply to many Chinese products — including upholstered domestic seating, mattresses, decorative plywood, stainless steel sinks, steel racks, fasteners and aluminum extrusions — so check your tariff codes before you order.
Can I import a car from China to Canada?
Usually not as a private buyer. Transport Canada does not allow vehicles built to another country's standards to be imported, and they cannot be modified afterwards to meet Canadian standards. The exceptions are vehicles 15 years old or older, counted by month of manufacture, and vehicles the manufacturer certifies to Canadian standards, pre-authorised with Transport Canada. A new Chinese electric vehicle also needs a shipment-specific import permit under Canada's annual quota, and provincial inspection and registration rules apply on top. Check the vehicle's eligibility with Transport Canada before you buy.
Who clears customs in Canada — do you have an office there?
AGF has no office in Canada. Our Foshan team runs the China side, and in Canada a WCA partner agent coordinates arrival and delivery, with clearance filed by a licensed Canadian customs broker under your company's business number and CARM account. Your company is the importer of record. We do not offer DDP or "duties-included" shipping: duty, GST and any surtax are assessed on true values in your name, which is also what lets a registered business recover the GST.
