Japan to USA Freight Forwarding

Trusted Japan to USA shipping with transparent door-to-door quotes

Japan is one of America's largest sources of imports, and most of what crosses the Pacific from Yokohama, Nagoya and Kobe is high-value: cars and auto parts, machine tools and industrial robots, electronic components, precision instruments, whisky and sake. Alongside the factory trade runs an enthusiast one: JDM cars and kei trucks that have crossed the US 25-year line, and the engines and parts that keep them running. The ocean leg is short and dependable — about 11–20 days from Yokohama to Los Angeles/Long Beach — and the tariff picture is simpler than it looks. Since 24 July 2026 most Japanese goods carry a Section 301 tariff that brings the total duty to 12.5% unless the base rate is already higher, while goods under Section 232 sit outside that layer and pay their own rates instead: cars and covered auto parts at 15% all-in, steel, aluminum and copper at 50%, and a published list of steel and aluminum derivatives.

AGF Advantage on This Lane

We work through WCA partner agents in Japan; AGF has no office there. Our partners collect from dealers, auction yards and factories, handle Japanese export clearance through NACCS — including the deregistration papers every used car needs — and load containers or deliver to the RoRo terminals at Yokohama/Kawasaki, Nagoya and Kobe. Our own work is concentrated at the end where most Japanese cargo lands: AGF is headquartered in Glendale, close to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. We file the ISF at least 24 hours before loading in Japan, our licensed customs brokers file the entry — including the DOT HS-7 and EPA 3520-1 declarations an imported car needs — and partner facilities near the ports devan containers of cars and machinery before trucking or rail delivery to any state. AGF is an FMC-licensed NVOCC (OTI #031665NF) and a WCA member.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does shipping from Japan to the USA take?
Container services from Yokohama reach Los Angeles/Long Beach in about 11–20 days, around 11 on a direct sailing, and RoRo car carriers from Yokohama to Long Beach take about 14–18 days. To the East Coast, New York is about 25–38 days and Savannah about 28–42 days all-water, so for inland and eastern deliveries it is worth comparing West Coast discharge plus rail. Allow extra time around Japanese New Year, Golden Week (late April to early May) and Obon (mid-August), when factories, yards and government offices close.
What is the tariff on shipping from Japan to the USA?
Since 24 July 2026 most Japanese goods carry a Section 301 tariff set so that the total, including the normal (MFN) duty, is 12.5%; where the MFN rate is already 12.5% or more, nothing is added. Goods under Section 232 are outside that layer and pay their own rates: Japanese cars and covered auto parts 15% all-in, steel, aluminum and copper 50%, and listed steel and aluminum derivatives at the rate their annex sets. Cars 25 years and older fall outside Section 232 and pay 12.5% (the 2.5% base rate plus 10%), and kei trucks pay their 25% base rate. Some products are exempt altogether. Rates change, so our licensed customs brokers confirm the total for your HS code at quoting.
Can I import a car from Japan to the USA?
Yes, if it was built at least 25 years ago, counted to the month of manufacture, or was originally made to US standards. The build month has to be proven, because Japanese export papers show the first registration date rather than the build date. We ship JDM cars and kei trucks by container or RoRo, and our customs brokers file the DOT HS-7 and EPA 3520-1 at entry. Registration is a separate, state-level step: California requires costly CARB modification for most imports, and several states restrict kei trucks.
Who handles the Japan side of my shipment?
Our WCA partner agents in Japan; AGF has no office there. They collect the cargo, prepare the export documents, file the export declaration in NACCS, Japan's customs system, and load the container or deliver to the RoRo terminal. For a used car, the seller deregisters it for export first, and that certificate becomes your ownership document in the US. We coordinate from Glendale, file the ISF at least 24 hours before loading, and take the shipment through US clearance and delivery.
What should I check before buying machinery in Japan?
Two things. On the Japanese side, some high-precision machine tools and robots are controlled under Japan's export rules even when they are going to the US, so ask the seller for a 該非判定書 (a classification statement) and, if the item is listed, for confirmation that the seller will obtain the export licence. On the US side, the duty depends on the HS heading: machining centers and industrial robots are on a temporary Section 232 reduction list until the end of 2027, while most other machine tools pay the 12.5% Section 301 total. We confirm both before you pay.
