Kazakhstan is building manufacturing capacity, and most of the equipment comes from China: food-processing and packaging lines, plastics and injection moulding, woodworking and metalworking machinery, construction materials plant, and the compressors, generators and handling equipment that go with them.
Machinery is the least forgiving cargo on this lane. It is heavy, it is frequently out of gauge, it cannot be repacked once it leaves the factory, and it has to arrive in a state that lets it be assembled and commissioned. On a routing with a break of gauge, several liftings and a land border, the decisions that determine whether that happens are made in the factory yard weeks before departure — how the machine is split, how it is crated, where the lifting points are, and whether anyone has checked that the largest piece fits the intended equipment.
This is the cargo where having our own people in China stops being a convenience and becomes the whole point.
How Industrial Machinery Ships from China to Kazakhstan
Machinery that fits inside a container ships in 40HC, secured and braced. Machinery that does not goes on flat rack or open top, or moves as breakbulk — and that decision has to be made early, because it drives the routing, the permits and the cost. Out-of-gauge cargo on a rail routing has to clear loading-gauge limits at every point of the journey, and on a road routing it needs route surveys and permits for the countries it crosses.
Weight distribution matters as much as dimensions. A machine that is within the container payload but concentrates its mass over a metre of floor needs load-spreading, or it damages the container and sometimes itself. We plan the loading with the manufacturer — lifting points, centre of gravity, bracing, and how the machine is split for transport — before anything is crated.
- 40HC for containerisable machinery, with engineered bracing and load spreading
- Flat rack and open top for out-of-gauge equipment, planned against rail loading gauge and road permits
- Breakbulk for genuinely oversized plant
- Loading supervised by our Foshan team, with photographic records for insurance and commissioning
- Spares and tooling shipped with the machine rather than as a separate later consignment
- Rail via Khorgos or Dostyk; road where the dimensions or the destination require it
What Drives the Cost
- Whether the equipment containerises, or needs flat rack, open top or breakbulk
- Out-of-gauge dimensions, which drive permits, route surveys and sometimes the entire routing
- Total weight and how it is distributed across the load
- Crating and preservation standards, especially for machinery crossing a winter
- Lifting and handling at destination — what equipment is available at the site, and whether it is adequate
- EAC machinery certification, which has a long lead time and should start at order stage
HS Codes and Duty Notes
Classification guidance only — duty rates change and depend on your exact product. Our licensed customs brokers verify every code before you commit to an order.
| HS Code | Products | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 8438 / 8422 | Food and beverage processing machinery; packing and packaging machinery | Complete production lines are often invoiced as one item but shipped as many. The declaration needs to reflect the line as a whole or clearance becomes complicated. |
| 8477 | Machinery for working rubber or plastics — injection moulding, extrusion | Ancillary equipment such as chillers, dryers and conveyors may classify separately from the main machine. |
| 8465 / 8458–8463 | Woodworking machinery; metalworking machine tools | Some advanced machine tools have export-control implications from certain origins. Worth confirming before shipping. |
| 8474 | Machinery for sorting, crushing or working mineral substances | Construction-materials plant. Typically out of gauge and shipped in sections. |
| 8431 / spare parts | Parts suitable for use with the above machinery | Spares shipped with a machine classify differently from spares shipped separately later. Shipping them together is usually simpler and cheaper. |
Regulations and Compliance
EAC conformity — machinery and equipment safety
The EAEU technical regulation on the safety of machinery and equipment covers most industrial plant and requires conformity assessment with EAC marking. The assessment route depends on the machine, and the lead time is frequently longer than the shipping time. Start it when the order is placed. Equipment that arrives without it cannot be legally commissioned.
Pressure equipment and other overlapping regulations
Machines incorporating pressure vessels, or operating in potentially explosive atmospheres, fall under additional EAEU technical regulations beyond the general machinery one. A single production line can be in scope of several at once, which is a common source of surprise at commissioning.
Technical documentation in Russian
Operating manuals, safety instructions and technical passports are required in Russian for conformity assessment and for lawful operation. Chinese manufacturers frequently supply English or Chinese only, and translation should be specified in the purchase contract rather than negotiated afterwards.
EAEU customs tariff and Kazakh VAT
The common external tariff applies plus 12% Kazakh import VAT. Some categories of production equipment qualify for relief or preferential treatment under investment and industrial policy schemes — worth investigating with a Kazakh broker before importing, as it can materially change the economics of a plant purchase.
Out-of-gauge permits
Oversized loads need permits and route approval for the road legs, and clearance against loading gauge for rail. These take time to obtain and are specific to the actual dimensions, so they cannot be arranged retrospectively once the machine is crated.
Door-to-Door Shipping Service
We start with drawings, not with a booking. Our Foshan team visits the manufacturer, confirms the dimensions and weights of each transport unit, checks lifting points and centre of gravity, and agrees how the machine will be split and crated.
That determines the equipment — container, flat rack, open top or breakbulk — and the routing, including any permits the road or rail legs require. We supervise loading and photograph it, which serves both the insurance file and the eventual reassembly.
Rail or road to Kazakhstan, EAEU clearance, delivery to site, and coordination of offloading. We confirm in advance what lifting capacity is available at the destination, because a machine arriving somewhere that cannot lift it is a problem with no cheap solution.
