How Chargeable Weight Works
Aircraft run out of space before they run out of lift, so airlines charge light, bulky cargo by its size. For each line the calculator works out:
- Volumetric weight (kg) = length × width × height in cm ÷ 6,000 — or ÷ 5,000 for express couriers
- Chargeable weight = the greater of the total actual weight and the total volumetric weight, rounded up to the next 0.5 kg
On top of the rate per chargeable kilogram come fuel and security surcharges and handling at both ends. Our post on air freight costs from China to California explains those, and our air freight through LAX page covers clearance and delivery on arrival.
