Shipping Furniture and Lighting from China to France

From the Lecong and Longjiang furniture clusters and Guzhen's lighting makers to French showrooms, retailers and hotel projects

China flagChinaFrance flagFrance trade lane

Foshan's Shunde district is the centre of China's furniture trade: Lecong is a vast wholesale furniture market, and Longjiang next door is where much of the upholstered, office and hotel furniture is made. Guzhen, in neighbouring Zhongshan, is China's lighting town. AGF's own Foshan office is inside this cluster, so supplier visits, quality checks and consolidation across several factories into one container are part of normal work rather than a special request.

The French side has its own rules, and some changed recently. Furniture placed on the French market falls under the furniture EPR scheme (REP éléments d'ameublement), which requires the importer to join an approved eco-organisme before the first sale. The EU's General Product Safety Regulation has applied since December 2024, the REACH formaldehyde limit for furniture since 6 August 2026, and the EU Deforestation Regulation reaches wood furniture on 30 December 2026. Lighting adds CE marking and the electrical-equipment EPR. In France, clearance and delivery run through our WCA partner agents and a licensed customs representative; AGF has no office in France.

Shipping Furniture & Lighting from China to France

Furniture fills a container's space long before its weight limit, so the 40ft high cube is the standard box and packing decides the cost. As a planning guide a 40HC holds roughly 250–300 stacking chairs, far fewer assembled sofas, and knock-down case goods load much more densely than assembled pieces. Lighting is light but fragile, and travels best cartoned and palletised alongside the furniture. We confirm the load plan from the factories' packing lists before booking.

Cargo sails from Nansha or Shekou to Le Havre for Paris and the north, or to Marseille-Fos for the south and the Rhône valley. Carriers choose between Suez and the Cape service by service — the Cape adds roughly 10–15 days — so we confirm the routing and transit on each booking. Our Foshan team checks finishes and packing and photographs the loading before the container is sealed.

  • 40HC as the standard box — roughly 250–300 stacking chairs as a planning guide, far fewer assembled sofas
  • Multi-factory consolidation across Lecong, Longjiang and Guzhen into one container
  • Pre-loading quality checks and loading photos by our Foshan team
  • Le Havre for Paris and the north, Marseille-Fos for the south, with delivery by our French partners

What Drives the Cost

  • Volume, not weight — knock-down versus assembled, and how much is upholstered
  • Consolidation across several factories versus a single-supplier container
  • Routing via Suez or the Cape, and the surcharges that come with it
  • French eco-contributions per item — furniture, lighting as electrical equipment, and packaging
  • Compliance testing: formaldehyde emissions, fire performance for contract furniture, CE files for lighting
  • Final delivery: tail-lift trucks, two-person delivery to a showroom, or a timed delivery to a hotel site

Regulations and Compliance

French furniture EPR (REP éléments d'ameublement)

The business that first places furniture on the French market — usually the importer — must join an approved eco-organisme, such as Ecomaison for household furniture or Valdelia for professional furniture, obtain a unique identifier (IDU) from ADEME through its SYDEREP register, and pay an eco-contribution per item, which retailers show to consumers as the éco-participation. A non-French seller can appoint an authorised representative. It has to be in place before the first sale.

The General Product Safety Regulation

Since 13 December 2024, consumer products sold in the EU — furniture and lighting included — must be safe under Regulation (EU) 2023/988, carry product identification and traceability information, and have an economic operator established in the EU responsible for them. Safety warnings and instructions must be in French for sale in France.

Formaldehyde — the REACH limit from 6 August 2026

Since 6 August 2026, furniture and wood-based articles placed on the EU market must not release formaldehyde above 0.062 mg/m³ under the REACH test conditions — about half the old E1 benchmark many Chinese board suppliers quote. Ask for emission test reports on the boards and finished pieces before ordering, not after the container lands.

The EU Deforestation Regulation

From 30 December 2026 for large and medium operators, and 30 June 2027 for small and micro undertakings, wooden furniture placed on the EU market needs a due-diligence statement showing it is deforestation-free and legally produced, with geolocation of the plots where the wood was harvested. That data has to come from the Chinese factory and the timber behind it, which takes months to establish — start with suppliers now.

Lighting — CE, ecodesign and EPR

Luminaires need CE marking under the low-voltage, EMC and RoHS rules, and the light sources in them must meet the EU ecodesign and energy-labelling rules. In France, lighting is electrical equipment for EPR purposes, and rechargeable or solar lamps bring the battery rules in as well.

Contract furniture and fire performance

Hotels, restaurants and other public venues in France (établissements recevant du public) specify fire-performance classifications for upholstered seating, fabrics and some furnishings. Get the factory's test reports against the French requirements before production; retesting after arrival is slow and expensive.

Door-to-Door Shipping Service

Send us your supplier list and pro formas. Our Foshan team visits the factories in Lecong, Longjiang and Guzhen as needed, checks finish, packing and labelling, collects the documents your French compliance needs, consolidates goods from several suppliers, and supervises loading with photos.

In France our WCA partner agent and a licensed customs representative clear the container, with import VAT accounted for on the return by VAT-registered importers, and our partners deliver to your warehouse, showroom or hotel site. AGF has no office in France.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to ship a container of furniture from China to France?
It depends on how efficiently the furniture packs into a 40ft high cube, whether the container is consolidated from several factories, the Suez or Cape routing that week, and delivery in France. On top of the freight come EU duty for each tariff line, import VAT and the French eco-contribution. We quote door to door with exclusions listed up front.
Do I have to pay the eco-participation on furniture imported into France?
Yes, if you are the business placing it on the French market. You join an approved eco-organisme — Ecomaison for household furniture or Valdelia for professional furniture, for example — obtain an IDU from ADEME and pay an eco-contribution per item, which is passed on to buyers as the éco-participation. Lighting and packaging have their own EPR schemes.
Can you consolidate furniture from several factories in Foshan?
Yes. Our Foshan office is in the cluster, so collecting from several factories in Lecong, Longjiang and Guzhen and loading them into one container is routine. We check each supplier's goods and packing before loading and photograph the container.
How long does shipping from China to France take?
It depends on the routing. Carriers choose between Suez and the Cape service by service, and the Cape adds roughly 10–15 days, so we confirm the transit on each booking. Le Havre serves Paris and the north, Marseille-Fos the south; delivery to your door follows clearance.
