EU Deforestation Regulation — the 30 December 2026 deadline
This is the one to plan around. The EU Deforestation Regulation applies from **30 December 2026** for large and medium operators, with an extended deadline of 30 June 2027 for those that qualified as small or micro undertakings before 30 December 2024. It covers wood, coffee, cocoa, soy, cattle, palm oil and natural rubber — so wood furniture is squarely in scope, and so is anything with a rubber or palm-derived component. Operators must show the goods are not linked to land deforested or degraded after 31 December 2020, and that they were produced legally, with geolocation data for the plots of origin and a due-diligence statement filed before the goods enter the market. This is a supply-chain traceability problem more than a customs one: the data has to come from the Chinese supplier and the forest of origin behind them, which takes months to establish rather than weeks. Start with your suppliers now if you have not.
Timber due diligence
Alongside EUDR, wood entering the EU carries timber due-diligence obligations — the EU's stricter cousin of the US Lacey Act. Reputable Chinese furniture factories provide species and harvest-country documentation routinely; treat a supplier who cannot as a signal about the rest of their paperwork.
